Ambisi sering dipandang sebagai mesin kemajuan. Ia adalah dorongan batin untuk tumbuh, melampaui keadaan hari ini, dan menjemput masa depan yang lebih baik. Tanpa ambisi, manusia mudah terjebak dalam stagnasi dan kepasrahan. Namun di titik tertentu, ambisi yang tidak disadari, tidak diarahkan, dan tidak dikendalikan dapat berubah wajah menjadi sesuatu yang melelahkan itulah yang disebut denganambisius. Banyak orang keliru karena menyamakan dorongan sehat untuk berkembang dengan nafsu pencapaian yang tak kenal batas.

Secara sederhana, ambisi adalah tujuan yang disertai kesadaran. Ia tumbuh dari niat yang jernih, proses yang sabar, dan orientasi nilai yang jelas. Ambisi membuat seseorang tekun, konsisten, dan berani menunda kesenangan demi hasil yang bermakna. Dalam perspektif Al-Qur’an dan hadits menjelaskan hal itu dengan prinsip fastabiqul khairat—berlomba dalam kebaikan—yang menekankan kualitas niat dan arah, bukan sekadar kecepatan hasil. Ambisi yang sehat menumbuhkan daya juang tanpa merusak ketenangan batin.

فَاسْتَبِقُوا الْخَيْرَاتِ
“Berlomba-lombalah dalam kebaikan.” (QS. Al-Baqarah: 148)

Para ulama tafsir seperti Imam Al-Qurthubi menjelaskan bahwa ayat ini memerintahkan manusia untuk memiliki semangat tinggi (himmah ‘aliyah), namun dalam koridor kebaikan dan keridaan Allah, bukan sekadar mengejar dunia. Ambisi dalam Islam selalu terkait dengan arah: kebaikan, kemanfaatan, dan keberlanjutan.

Rasulullah ﷺ juga menanamkan ambisi yang sehat melalui sabdanya:

احْرِصْ عَلَى مَا يَنْفَعُكَ، وَاسْتَعِنْ بِاللَّهِ، وَلَا تَعْجِزْ
“Bersungguh-sungguhlah terhadap apa yang bermanfaat bagimu, mintalah pertolongan kepada Allah, dan jangan lemah.” (HR. Muslim)

Hadits ini menunjukkan keseimbangan antara usaha maksimal, ketergantungan kepada Allah, dan ketenangan batin. Inilah ciri ambisi yang lurus: kuat dalam ikhtiar, tenang dalam jiwa.

Sebaliknya, ambisius adalah ambisi yang kehilangan kendali. Ia ditandai oleh ketergesaan, kecemasan berlebih, dan obsesi pada hasil instan. Ambisius membuat seseorang mudah membandingkan diri, takut tertinggal, dan mengorbankan nilai demi capaian. Dalam kacamata sains psikologi, kondisi ini sering memicu stres kronis dan burnout, karena otak terus berada dalam mode ancaman, bukan pertumbuhan. Energi habis untuk mengejar target, sementara makna dan keberlanjutan terabaikan sebagaimana digambarkan dalam Al-Qur’an mengingatkan bahaya ini:

أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ
“Bermegah-megahan telah melalaikan kalian.” (QS. At-Takatsur: 1)

Imam Ibnu Katsir menjelaskan bahwa ayat ini menegur manusia yang sibuk menumpuk pencapaian, jabatan, dan pengakuan hingga lupa tujuan hidup. Ambisius menjadikan hasil sebagai tuhan kecil, sementara proses, adab, dan makna dikorbankan.

Rasulullah ﷺ pun bersabda:

لَوْ كَانَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَانِ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ لَابْتَغَى ثَالِثًا
“Seandainya anak Adam memiliki dua lembah emas, niscaya ia akan mencari yang ketiga.” (HR. Bukhari dan Muslim)

Para ulama menegaskan hadits ini sebagai peringatan bahwa nafsu pencapaian tanpa kendali tidak akan pernah puas dan justru menguras jiwa.

Sejarah memberi pelajaran berharga. Tokoh-tokoh besar yang berpengaruh justru dikenal bukan karena ketergesaan mereka, tetapi karena kesabaran dan keteguhan arah. Mereka memiliki ambisi yang panjang napasnya membangun peradaban, bukan sekadar reputasi. Sebaliknya, banyak kehancuran lahir dari ambisius: keinginan menaklukkan segalanya tanpa kendali moral dan kebijaksanaan waktu.

Persamaan ambisi dan ambisius terletak pada energi dorongnya. Keduanya sama-sama ingin maju. Namun perbedaannya terletak pada arah, ritme, dan nilai. Ambisi menjaga keseimbangan antara ikhtiar dan tawakal; ambisius terjebak pada hasil dan pengakuan. Karena itu, tugas kita bukan mematikan ambisi, melainkan memurnikannya, mengelola dorongan terus bertumbuh agar tetap bernilai, berdaya, dan berkelanjutan.

Ambisi yang benar bukan sekadar membuat kita “sampai”, tetapi memastikan kita sampai dengan utuh: jiwa tetap jernih, hidup semakin dewasa dan bermakna, dan perjalanan perjuangan tetap selaras dengan sunnatullah.
